Faculty Awards and Grants

Carden Award – recognizes and encourages the highest standards of teaching, scholarship, helpfulness to students, and other contributions to the college community – nomination deadline is in March; nominations accepted from Berry College students, faculty, staff, and alumni – awarded at Commencement.

Teaching Excellence Award – recognizes the fundamental importance of the quality of teaching to the value of the higher education process – presented to a faculty member who has made a distinct difference in the teaching climate of the college -- nomination deadline is in March; nominations accepted from Berry College students, faculty, staff, and alumni awarded at Honors Convocation.

Eleana Garrett Award for Meritorious Advising & Caring – recognizes an exceptional and caring advisor, who shows concern for advisees’ career goals and future goals, is willing to seek answers to advisees’ questions, is knowledgeable about college regulations and curricula, and is effective in directing students toward productive college experiences – nomination deadline is in March; nominations accepted from Berry College students, faculty, staff, and alumni awarded at Honors Convocation.

Dave and Lu Garrett Award for Meritorious Teaching – recognizes a member of the faculty who has taught four or more courses during the academic year – the primary emphasis is upon the following aspects of teaching: the inspiration of students towards an enthusiastic interest in an academic discipline and in learning in general, evidence of professional competence in the teacher’s field, and interest in the academic and personal welfare of students both within and without the classroom – nomination deadline is in early April and is announced by the Office of the Provost; nominations only from students – awarded at Commencement.

Sabbaticals – one semester with pay or one year with half pay to conduct research or complete intensive project; applications due Sept. 20 for next academic year – recommended by Deans’ Council for approval by President and Provost.

Faculty Development Grants & Summer Stipend Applications – Applications for faculty development grants are due by July 1, September 15, January 15, and March 15 of each year and are awarded within one month. Awards currently may not exceed $2,000 per faculty development grant; no faculty member can receive more than a total of $3000 in any given year (not including a summer stipend). Application deadline for a summer stipend is January 15 – summer stipend recipients may receive a stipend only once in a 3-year period ($3500 for non-tenured faculty; $2500 for tenured faculty), is expected to devote the entire summer to research and will not engage in teaching or other activities such as summer seminars.

Summer Course Development Grants – $1000 summer stipend to develop or extensively revise course; selected by Center for Teaching Excellence Advisory Committee.

Cultural Immersion & Professional Growth Grant – Summer grant of up to $4000 for international travel/research – selected by International Programs Committee.

Summer International Programs (SIP) Course Development Grant – Summer grant of up to $3000 to develop international course to be offered within following two academic years – selected by International Programs Committee.

Laura Maddox Smith – grant awarded to a faculty member and team of students to support research in the environmental sciences – Application deadline is in the Spring. This program is administered through the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences.

Student Awards and Grants

Martha Berry Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement – recognizes an outstanding member of the senior class who has completed at least 60 hours at Berry and whose individual achievement fulfills Berry’s mission – nomination deadline is in March; selection committee, composed of faculty/staff and students, will select the winner;awarded at Honors Convocation.

Richards Scholars – grants awarded to rising juniors to help students move beyond the excellent work characteristic of many Berry students to a superlative level through a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a faculty member – Application deadline is in March – This program is administered through the Office of the Provost.

Kirbo Scholars – scholarships to support projects related to the student’s academic research or growth experiences such as study abroad, internships, or artistic endeavors – Application deadline is in January – This program is administered through the Council on Student Scholarship.

George Scholars – grants awarded to Psychology juniors and seniors to help students move beyond the excellent academic characteristics of many Berry students to a superlative level through a one-on-one working relationship with a psychology faculty member – Application deadline is in the Fall – This program is administered through the Department of Psychology.

Symposium on Student Scholarship – all undergraduate students are invited to participate in annual symposium, held in early April, either through a poster or paper presentation – to increase awareness of and highlight undergraduate scholarship across the disciplines at Berry – submission deadline is March – This program is organized by the Council on Student Scholarship.
