Berry College's outstanding students, faculty and staff of the 2012-2013 academic year were honored at the recent Honors Convocation.
Justin Paterson, a senior biochemistry major from Decatur, Ga., was the recipient of the Martha Berry Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award. The award recognizes an outstanding senior whose achievement fulfills Berry's mission of intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth; while devoting learning to community and civic betterment. The student must have excellent grades, an exemplary record as a student worker either on or off campus, and active involvement in volunteer services or religion-in-life service opportunities.
Berry Assistant Professor of Economics Lauren Heller received the Eleana M. Garrett Award for Meritorious Advising. This award is presented to a faculty member who is an exceptional and caring advisor, shows concern for advisees' career goals and future goals, is willing to seek answers to advisees' questions, is knowledgeable about college regulations and curricula, and is effective in directing students toward productive college experiences.
Heller was also one of the recipients of the Student Government Association Faculty and Staff Member of the Year. Lydia Gordon, assistant director of student activities, took home the Staff Member of the Year award. The winners, selected by a student vote, best exemplify Berry's mission and service to students.
Associate Professor of Spanish Julee Tate won the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award. This award recognizes the fundamental importance of the quality of teaching to the value of higher education process. In total, 65 awards that covered various areas of campus life, work, and academic excellence were distributed throughout the evening.
