Five Berry College Professors Granted Tenure

Five Berry College professors have been awarded tenure and another professor has been promoted.

 

Assistant Professor of Biology Catherine Borer, Assistant Professor of Biology Renee Carleton, Associate Professor of Geology Tamie J. Jovanelly, Assistant Professor of Anthropology Timothy Knowlton and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Alice Suroviec were granted tenure.

 

Borer received her B.A. at Grinnell College and went on to receive her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. Borer's teaching interests include a range of biology and environmental science courses, with an emphasis on plant biology. Her research interests include the effects of human activities on the health of forested ecosystems, the physiological effects of altered environmental calcium availability, the ecological role of flowering dogwood trees, and cave conservation.

 

Carleton received her D.V.M. from the University of Florida and her Ph. D. from the University of Georgia. Carleton's teaching interests include animal physiology, vertebrate anatomy, wildlife diseases, and introductory biology courses. Her research interests include avian parasites and diseases and emerging infectious diseases of companion animals. 

 

Jovanelly, received her B.S. from the University of Michigan, her M.S. from the University of Nebraska, and her Ph. D. from Kent State University.  Her teaching expertise includes physical geology, historical geology, climate change, environmental hydrology and geomorphology.  She has researched both modern and paleo tsunami deposits, as well as groundwater and surface water interactions.  

 

Knowlton teaches "Introduction to Cultural Anthropology", "Origins of Human Behavior", "Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean", "Culture and Communication" and "Anthropology of the Body." He has researched in the field of the anthropology of religion, language and identity, and Mesoamerica.

 

Suroviec received her B.S. from Allegheny College and her Ph. D. from Virginia Tech. Suroviec teaches general chemistry and instrumental analysis.   She also directs undergraduate research projects at Berry in areas such as making new types of enzymatic sensors to detect glucose concentration.

 

Professor of Physics Todd Timberlake, a Rome native, was promoted to full professor. He received his B.S. in physics/astronomy and mathematics from Vanderbilt University and his Ph. D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin. Timberlake's teaching interests include the discovery of galaxies, computational methods in physics, classical mechanics, and quantum mechanics. His research area is quantum chaos and using history to teach science.

 

Professor of Psychology Steven Bell and Director of Field Experience and Student Teaching Mary Outlaw were awarded the honorary titles of professor emeritus and senior lecture emeritus, respectively.
