Creative Writing Major (Begins Fall 2014)

Beginning in Fall 2014, the department of English, Rhetoric and Writing will offer a BA in Creative Writing in addition to a BA in English. The BA in Creative Writing will replace the Writing Track option of the English Major.

Prospective Students: As of Fall 2014, you may choose to major in Creative Writing or in English. (You may also minor in English or Writing; note that Creative Writing majors may not also minor in Writing.)

Current Berry students: If you are majoring in English with a concentration in Writing, your requirements will not change, and you can still graduate with a BA in English with a Writing Concentration, following the requirements of the Berry Catalog for the year you began study at Berry. However, you may switch from the writing concentration to the BA in Creative Writing if you wish; in this case, however, you will need to go by the Fall 2014 catalog for your full course of study.

Rising seniors: note that you will have to take ENG 250, ENG 475, and ENG 495 your senior year if you decide to switch to the BA in Creative Writing. Students who have taken ENG 201: Literature for Creative Writers may request a substitution for ENG 250.

Please see your advisor if you have any additional questions.

The Creative Writing BA

The new Creative Writing BA fuses academic literary study and creative studio work with opportunities for service and experiential learning focusing on nature and culture, cultivating an awareness of how writing emerges from the intersection of self and place. Creative Writing majors will have opportunities to interact one-on-one with writers of national and international renown; this feature, in addition to the extensive rural setting of the campus and special courses that combine an immersion in place, literature, and creative writing, all serve to make Berry’s creative writing program unique.

A major in Creative Writing requires 39 semester hours plus a final portfolio of work completed for the major and participation in a senior reading. The department offers a 200-level course to introduce students to general principles of craft in creative writing. Courses at the 300 and 400 levels concentrate on reading, drafting, and revision of creative work in a variety of genres in a workshop format. Creative Writing majors must also complete 15 hours of study in literature courses.

All Creative Writing majors are required to develop a portfolio of written work that represents significant successes in their career as a Creative Writing Major at Berry College. This should be completed during the term just prior to the student’s graduation and must be approved by department faculty. Students should consult with their advisor, the Department chair, and/or the department’s Curriculum Committee Chair for more information about the portfolio assessment.
