CTE Services
The CTE offers a variety of services to faculty, including:
- Teaching Fellows -- Teaching Fellows are members of the Berry faculty who have recently received awards for teaching excellence. Teaching Fellows are available for consultation at the request of individual faculty members. Contact the CTE director at x2154 for more information.
- Course Development Grants -- Berry College funds summer grants for course development to encourage faculty members to engage in professional activities during the summer that will: (1) greatly enhance courses they teach; (2) contribute to the goals and objectives of their department, school, and college; and (3) employ teaching initiatives that can serve as a model for other faculty. It is expected that grants will be used for initiatives that go well beyond normal levels of preparation for new course assignments.
- Videotape Service -- The CTE offers a videotaping service for faculty who request it as a means of getting an objective perspective on one’s teaching practices. Videotapes of classroom sessions are confidential and available only to that faculty member unless s/he requests the tape be reviewed by the Director or one of the Teaching Fellows as part of a consultation.
- Resource Center -- The CTE has a collection of books, articles, and internet materials available for reference in its spacious library in the Hoge building, in addition to bibliographies of materials available in Memorial Library and online. The Resource Center is quiet and conducive to study and research. Please contact the Director if you wish to make use of the Resource Center at any time (see Bibliography).
- Workshops -- The CTE sponsors 3-5 workshops for faculty each year. These workshops offer faculty the chance to learn and practice strategies, approaches or techniques with one or more expert facilitators. Topics for the workshops range from applications for teaching technology to evaluation strategies to professional development (see this semester's Schedule).
- Brownbags -- The CTE sponsors several lunchtime Brownbag Panel Discussions over the course of the year, usually linked to the month’s featured topic. Panelists present brief remarks on the topic under consideration and then the floor is open for discussion. Topics for these discussions range from pedagogical theory to social influences on teaching and learning to practical strategies for classroom practice (see Schedule).
- Teach Talk monthly newsletter -- Each month, the Center for Teaching Excellence distributes a newsletter focused on a particular topic or issue related to teaching and/or higher education. This newsletter includes a feature article, a selected bibliography with links, and faculty/staff resource list, as well as a Teach Talk email discussion prompt, a schedule of the month’s events and space for Berry faculty to share professional achievements related to teaching and/or the scholarship of teaching. This newsletter is distributed electronically via email and the web (see Archives).
- Berry Innovators' Series -- Highlighting the work of Berry faculty, this series of demonstrations followed by discussion allows the Berry community the opportunity to learn about the innovative pedagogical strategies developed by our colleagues (see Archives).
