Computer Recommendations and Requirements

Recommendations

If you are purchasing a new computer:
For Windows computers, OIT recommends either a 3GHz, Pentium IV system or higher or Intel Core 2 duo, 1.86 Ghz with a minimum of 1 GB RAM, a 10/100 network card, and Windows XP Professional or VISTA. We also recommend at least a 60GB hard drive, a cd-rom and a cd-rw drive, and working USB ports.  For Macintosh users, the recommended standard would be 1 Ghz or better and OSX operating system.

Minimum Requirements

If you already have a computer:
Students attending Berry College during the 2008-2009 year should be aware of some changes in the minimum requirements for personal computers that will be used to access the Berry College network and the Internet. Student computers must meet these minimum requirements to be eligible to connect to the Berry network.

All students connecting from a residence hall will be required to electronically register their computer(s) before using the internet.   When first detected by the Berry network, student's personal computers will automatically be directed to the "Welcome to Berry College Network" page where they will complete a process to gain access to the Berry network and Internet.

The Student's Responsibility

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their computer:  a) meets Berry College's requirements, b) that it is free from viruses and spyware and c) that data is backed up and protected on a regular basis (there are several free sources for this on the internet).

Where to get help

Berry College does not work on student-owned computers. However, there are local companies that can perform computer work for a fee. They are an independant contractor and thus are not endorsed by the college even though we are very familiar with their work.  Also, the BITS crew is available for both on and off campus service calls at a rate of $25.00 per hour.
