Men's Soccer Downs Roman Rivals Shorter 2-1 in Comeback Effort

ROME, Ga. -- Sourosh Amani made sure that the Berry men's soccer team remained unbeaten against Shorter, as he scored the game-winning goal in the Viking's 2-1 win over Hawks on Wednesday night. The win keeps Berry perfect in Southern States Athletic Conference play at 4-0 and improves the team's overall record to 6-1 for the season. Shorter falls to 2-5 this year and is 2-2 in the SSAC.
Amani made it two years in a row that Berry has downed its cross-town rival 2-1, with his strike in the 81st minute that beat Thomas Fulton in the Shorter goal. Berry's Ben Popple created the chance when he hit a long shot from about 20 yards out. Although the Popple's shot appeared to be headed wide, Fulton made a diving save to parry the ball away. However, the rebound fell directly to the feet of Amani who scored the game winner.
Shorter had held a brief lead in the match. Robert Whitnell scored his fifth goal in three games just past the 48 minute mark to the delight of the pro-Shorter crowd at Grizzard Park. After a mad scramble in the box, the ball fell to Whitnell at the top of the penalty area and the Brentwood, England native hit a looping shot over the head of Berry keeper Mike Wentzler who was caught out of position during the scramble.
The Hawks lead was short-lived, as the Vikings equalized just over four minutes later. Alejandro Polacios engaged a pair of Shorter defenders then crossed the ball to the back post for a waiting Teja Barkmann, who finished into the open net for the equalizer.
The Vikings nearly went ahead in the 56th minute, when Jorg Bergmann broke into the Shorter penalty area and fired a shot towards goal. However, the German striker was denied by a diving Fulton. The Shorter keeper finished the match with four saves all in the second half.
The rest of the match played out in chippy fashion, but the Vikings held on for the win. The match saw 37 fouls (20 for Shorter, 17 for Berry) and four yellow cards (three for Shorter, one for Berry).
In a scoreless first half neither team created many chances. The best opportunity of the half came in the 41st minute when Shorter's Kyle Timberlake ripped a shot to the far post that forced a diving save out of Wentzler in the Berry goal. The Berry No. 1 finished the match with three saves, all in the first half.
For Berry it is the third consecutive 2-1 win for Berry, which will host conference leaders Southern Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams are currently tied atop the conference with identical 4-0 conference records.Berry will have revenge on its mind, after last year'sRegion XIII Tournament Quarterfinal loss to the Warriors.
