The Berry Alumni Association Celebrates 100 Years of Service, 1908-2008
The Berry Alumni Association Centennial Celebration officially began during Alumni Weekend 2008 and will end on Founder’s Day 2009 with several fun celebrations held in between. Earlier this year, precursors to the official kick-off included a January volunteer service project, a May “Reunion Zero” for 2008 graduates of Berry College, and a grand Commencement march by the class of 1958C in honor of their 50th anniversary reunion. The official start for the centennial celebration occurred during Alumni Weekend 2008 during the last weekend in May. This weekend celebration was immediately followed by Alumni Work Week. Centennial celebrations will continue with the following:
September 20: Student/alumni outdoor movie and party event – showing Remember the Titans, partially filmed at Berry
October 3 – 5: Mountain Day 2008
January 29 - 31: Founder’s Day 2009, highlighted by a concert by internationally recognized pianist Roberto McCausland-Dieppa (81C)
The centennial also will be recognized during Fall Commencement and celebrated as part of ongoing regional alumni events. In addition, the Berry alumni Cage Center seat-naming project continues, with the goal of raising $100,000 through the naming of 100 seats by alumni ($1,000 each).
Alumni Weekend 2008 - Alumni Association Cenntennial Kickoff
A command performance by alumnus Michael Hendrick (89C) headlined the kickoff celebration for Berry’s alumni centennial.
Accompanying Michael’s recital on the opening day of the celebration was a grand birthday party marking the 100th anniversary of the Berry Alumni Association. Many old friends returned for the occasion, including past recipients of the distinguished alumni awards and former alumni association presidents. Also on hand were the 2008 award recipients: Dr. Joe A. Elder (63C), Distinguished Achievement; Bob Huff (51C), Distinguished Service; Bob Williams (62H), Entrepreneurial Spirit; and Brian Brodrick (97C), Outstanding Young Alumnus. Read the full story
Approximately 600 people turned out for the weekend extravaganza. Events of note included a jazz reception at Oak Hill, an alumni art show, the traditional golf scramble, a special appreciation luncheon and picnic, and reunions for a host of different class years. Other highlights included a book-signing for One Hundred Years of Service: The Berry Alumni Association 1908-2008, written by Dr. Ouida Dickey (50C, FFS), past president of the Berry Alumni Association; and the presentation of an alumni history exhibit curated by Dr. Jennifer Dickey (77A, 80C). A portrait of the Berry Alumni Association’s first director, the late Walter A. Johnson Sr., also was unveiled. Read the full story
