Dr. Kathy Brittain McKee joined the Berry faculty in 1986, coming from Oklahoma Baptist University where she had served as chair of the journalism department and advisor to student publications. During her first two years at Berry , McKee taught in the journalism and speech program while advising the college’s newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine, which won state and national recognition for excellence. After becoming a full-time faculty member in the communication department, she was awarded the Carden Award, the Garrett Award for Teaching and the Teaching Excellence Award from the institution, as well as the Voice of Berry Award. In 1994 she served as acting dean of the School of Humanities , Arts and Social Sciences.
In 1999, she became dean of academic services at the college and was promoted to associate provost in 2001. She was awarded the Martindale Award by the college in 2002. She continues to teach courses in communication, public relations and media law.
Dr. McKee graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of art’s degree in communication and religion/philosophy from Shorter College . She earned a master’s degree in journalism and the Ph.D. in mass communication from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia .
She is a co-author of Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning, now in its seventh edition and the co-author of Applied Public Relations: Cases in Stakeholder Relationships. She has published journal articles and book chapters and presented research dealing with visual images in music videos, media images of women and children, product placement, and student press freedom. Dr. McKee serves on the editorial board of Mass Communication and Society journal and is a past chair of the Mass Communication & Society Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
She has been a recipient of a research grant from the Cox Center for Newspaper Management, an American Academy of Advertising Research Fellowship, a Teaching Fellowship from the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and a Poynter Fellowship for the Teaching of Media Ethics. She participated in the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education National Leadership Forum in 2001.
