In addition to excellent regular course offerings, the biology curriculum also includes several types of student work and research opportunities. Students may work in the department or with faculty as research assistants through the Berry College work-opportunity program, may enroll in directed studies, and may take various special topics courses. Beginning in 1997, a special topics course relevant to biology was "Tropical Biodiversity and Conservation," which was taught in Costa Rica with assistance from the Organization for Tropical Studies. "Coral Reef Ecology" is a special topics course taught at the Belize Marine Tropical Research and Education Center in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. Students often take advantage of off-campus summer internships, such as those provided through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program, the Hughes program, conservation organizations, and environmental consultants. Most biology students take advantage of at least one of these unique opportunities for education and experience beyond the classroom. Via the School Research Committee and an E-mail distribution list, students are kept informed about internships and related off-campus opportunities.
