Janda Canalis teaches second grade at BCES. Before joining the BCES
staff,
she taught in the Scotland County, NC public schools where she was
recognized
as the Scotland County Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Young
Educator,
Outstanding Woman Educator, and received the SUMMIT award for
innovative
teaching in 1993 and 1995. While employed in Scotland County, she
was the
first teacher to organize a multi-age classroom (grades 3-5) on a
year-round
academic calendar.
Mrs. Canalis received her bachelor's degree in elementary education
from St.
Andrew's College in North Carolina and her master's degree in early
childhood
education at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. She holds a specialty
certification in gifted education. Topics of presentations she has
made in
the professional community include: interdisciplinary thematic
teaching,
national board certification, creating classroom communities,
promoting
reflective thinking in teacher education, and integrating the arts
into
classroom instruction. Titles of publications: Creative

In 1997, Canalis earned board certification from the National
Board for
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in the category for teachers
of
students ages 7-12. This accomplishment highlights her dedication to
continuous learning and her devotion to excellence in teaching.
Currently,
Ms. Canalis is a doctoral student at Georgia State University where
she is
pursuing her Ph.D. in early childhood education. The focus of
her research
is on multicultural teacher education.
On a personal note, Ms. Canalis has lived in both Italy and the
United
States. She is fluent in Italian. She resides with her
husband, Lorenzo
Canalis in Rome, Ga. Her daughter Amy, attends the University
of Georgia and
her son Ian, teaches music in the Barrow County School System.
Ms. Canalis
enjoys music, art, renovating their 100 year old home, and spending
time with
family. She worked 12 years as a registered nurse prior to
becoming a
teacher. She brings this experience to her favorite subject to
teach:
science.
