Charter School of Education and Human Sciences

The Charter School of Education and Human Sciences was established in 1992 and includes the departments of health and physical education, psychology, and teacher education. The dean of the school is Dr. Jacqueline M. McDowell. The mission of the school is to prepare and develop individuals who are mindful of the complex nature of our society. Effective professionals in education and psychology rely upon a strong knowledge base, intensive training, a strong code of ethics, and significant and varied experience. The programs in the Charter School of Education and Human Sciences are innovative, academically challenging and field-based. Exciting opportunities are available for students with an interest in research to work with faculty on a variety of projects.

Teacher Education Program Honored with National Award

“The teachers we graduate are unique because their courses are grounded in a liberal arts education.  They study in diverse cultures and earn an endorsement on their teaching certificates which certifies them to work with second-language learners (ESOL).  Our graduates work and learn in a state-of-the-art educational facility with enhanced educational technology and complete experiences in schools and communities beginning in their freshman year.  We also have a child development center, elementary school and middle school right on our campus where our students study teaching and learning.  It is these initiatives which make us distinctive in the State of Georgia.  We are delighted GATE recognizes our efforts to educate teachers prepared for 21st century classrooms.  We are honored to receive this prestigious state award and the recognition it brings to our faculty, school districts that hire our students, the students themselves and the children they will teach.”  - Jacqueline McDowell, Dean

Early Childhood Education (B.S.) for teaching pre-kindergarten to grade 5

Health and Physical Education (B.S.) for teaching pre-kindergarten to grade 12

Middle-Grades Education (B.S.) for teaching grades 4-8

Psychology (B.A./B.S.)

Minors:

Secondary Education (for teaching grades 7-12.  Students major in a subject area - English, biology, chemistry, physics, government, history, or mathematics - and minor in education.)

P-12 Education (for teaching preschool through grade 12.  Students major in a subject area - art, French, German, Spanish, health/physical education and music - and minor in education.)

Family Studies - Students with any Berry major can elect to minor in family studies to enhance their knowledge and skills of family life education, prevention and intervention programs.  See undergraduate programs.
